The History Of Geiger Manufacturing
More than 120 years ago, Geiger Manufacturing started serving local industries. Today, the works can be found throughout the United States. It all started in 1904 when Joseph Geiger, a machinist at the old Sampson iron works, start Geiger Iron Works. Most of the early work involved making machines for the former Holt Manufacturing Company. Geiger found time to design and construct an asphalt paving plant that contributed to the development of paved highways in California, replacing old dirt roads. When the Main Street shop was destroyed by a fire in 1913, Geiger moved his operations to the present location of 1110 East Scotts Ave. By the time of Geiger's death in 1930, the business had been incorporated. His widow assumed the presidency, serving until 1938 when she died and was succeeded by their son, Joseph Donald Geiger. During World War II, Geiger manufactured practice bomb casings and submarine doors. Joseph Geiger was instrumental in forming the Stockton Manufacturers Association. During the period of Joseph's management, the company grew and greatly expanded its machining capabilities to become the largest jobbing shop in the valley. When Joseph died in 1969, at only fifty-five years old, ownership and management was passed to his widow, Carolyn. Carolyn ran the business for nearly twenty-five years, retiring in 1988. During that time, she had recruited a young foreman, Roger Haack, who succeeded her as president after her retirement and continues his leadership today.
Innovation and Future Development
Over the years, Geiger has produced tomato and celery transplanters, silkscreen printing presses, paper box folders, machine bottle washers and fillers, and can making and mining equipment. It repairs machines for businesses all over the United States. Geiger Manufacturing continues to explore new fields, such as experimental asparagus harvester, where the company can use the talents of its skilled union machinists and fabricators to develop new products. Geiger Manufacturing is a part of Stockton, California's past and a participant in the future.
